  Raghu Rai: Born in 1942, Raghu Rai took up photography in 1965 and a year later joined The Statesman as chief photographer. From 1976 to 1991, he worked for the news magazines Sunday and India Today. He has contributed ground-breaking photo essays on social, political and cultural themes to many of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines, including Time, Life, GEO, The New York Times, The Sunday Times, Newsweek and The New Yorker. Based in New Delhi, Rai has covered India extensively. He has produced more than 55 picture books on various subjects on India and continues to be an associate of Magnum Photos. In 1972, he was awarded the Padma Shree, the fourth-highest civilian award in India and one of the highest civilian awards ever given to a photographer. His monumental body of work covers a slice of India’s modern history, because of this, he has come to be known as the father of photojournalism in India.
