Roli Books’ Ruby AnniversaryRoli Books celebrates 40th Anniversary
We are pleased to announce that Roli Books marked its milestone 40th anniversary with celebrations at Bikaner House, New Delhi on 15 November, 2018. The evening included a screening of a 5-min film documenting their journey, followed by the publisher’s address.
Speaking on the occasion, Kapil Kapoor, Director, said, “Custodians of culture, a position that comes with great responsibility. We look to the future with a sense of pride, optimism, purpose and commitment. A commitment to help preserve our culture and showcase the best of India to the world. Today we stand on a strong foundation that has been fortified over the past 40 years. We are privileged, as publishers to sit at the cross roads of many creative disciplines. Books remain at the core of everything we do, and allow us to branch into other areas that increase the cultural capital of the publishing house”.
“Our country spoils us with its riches, and we at Roli will continue our contribution in documenting its history, arts, crafts, spirituality and culture not only for adults but in a return to our roots, we will shortly be bringing out a unique and innovative children’s publishing programme, enriched with the Roli DNA. The potential of producing children’s books with Indian authors, illustrators and subjects with a universal theme is enormous and we would like to extend our publishing expertise to this area of books”, added Priya Kapoor, Editorial Director, Roli Books.
This brings us to our newest segment – publishing family histories under a dedicated imprint. At a time when there is much scepticism and debate over the writing and re-writing of our history, we aspire to document these personal stories from the ground up. Accounts of ordinary people, their families, businesses, migrations and contributions to our nation. Through this endeavour we will preserve the people’s story of India over the past century.
We remain committed to continuing our annual exhibition in which we showcase a major work of art of historical importance or choose a theme such as the exhibition which marked the centenary year of the The Great War – India and the First World War. These exhibitions are important to us because they help extend the reach of our books and because they also allow us to share with a wider audience the incredible archival material we uncover for the books we publish.
In addition to exhibitions, we at Roli want to bring back the art of formal and nuanced debating for a live audience. It is our endeavour in the years to come to build such a platform, where both sides of the argument find a space to present their views and counter those that oppose them.
Three years ago we were given the incredible opportunity to extend the CMYK bookshop brand to gift and museum shops in Jaipur. The three shops are situated in the breath-taking Amer fort, Jantar Mantar, and Albert Hall Museum. This gave an impetus to our in-house gift and stationery brand – Designwallas. While producing high quality souvenirs for these monuments we once again turned to our book archives and found a wealth of material and used it to create desirable gift and stationery products. Today Designwallas products find space in the most prestigious museum shops around the world – from the MoMa to the V&A.
A book installation by Madan Lal was displayed at the welcome foyer and a specially curated menu of recipes from Roli Books’ award-winning books was served to the guests.
The evening was attended by eminent personalities, authors, diplomats including Smt Sheila Dixit, Pavan K. Varma, JJ Valaya, Raghu Rai, Jatin Das, Dayanita Singh, Aryama Sundaram, Shirin Paul, Kishwar Desai among others.
